Tips for surviving your first year as a nurse

Your first year of nursing can be overwhelming and intimidating, but in the span of that one year you will see tremendous personal and professional growth.

Facing the unknown can be difficult, but with these tips you will be on your way to owning your first year as a nurse.

Ask questions

Asking questions is the most simple and effective way to learn something new in the industry. Most people are afraid to ask questions and don’t like  to admit when they don’t know something. However, everyone is still learning. Regardless of how long someone has been in the industry, don’t hesitate to ask your fellow nurses questions. It shows that you are confident, wanting to improve and willing to learn and communicate with others.

You will quickly learn the significance of patient care, so obtaining the correct information in a timely manner is vital. If you are unable to ask a question in the moment, try making a list that you can refer back to later.

Find a mentor

Because you will have a thousand questions when first starting as a nurse, it is important to find someone you can trust and rely on to be there for you. This should be someone who either works in your field or in a field that you want to be in. Your mentor should also be someone with experience who is knowledgeable and can provide you with a vast amount of information.

Stay positive

Nursing can be a hectic career and there are times where you feel overwhelmed. However, it is important to remain calm and keep a positive mindset as that will help you have peace of mind, and  it will affect your patient care as well. Some days will be better than others, but focus on the positive aspect of the day rather than dwelling on the negative.

Practice self-care

Nursing can be a stressful job. It is important that you remember to relax and take time away for yourself. If you are feeling overwhelmed in the moment, take a few minutes to step away from your current situation and come back when you are feeling more calm. Because they understand the significance of patient care, nurses often overlook their own health, but it is not beneficial to anyone if you get sick or are feeling stressed.

Set goals

Your first year of nursing will fly by. Make note of the things you want to accomplish and stick to it. These goals should be realistic and achievable while helping you learn along the way. Setting small goals that you can achieve daily or weekly will help boost your confidence and be more successful as a nurse.

Get to know your coworkers

You and your coworkers will spend many hours a week together, so get to know them. Over time they will be a great resource for positivity, support and information. Fostering these positive relationships amongst one another will help create a community of like-minded people who want to do their best work each day.
