Why is patient care important?

Patient care is so important because it shows the patients, family and other healthcare providers that you care. This encourages a positive relationship between the patient and nurse, which in turn makes patients easier to care for. This will lead to a more positive experience for the patient, as well as a happier nursing team and department.

The effect of poor patient care

When healthcare professionals don’t put enough emphasis on patient care, the results can be less than desirable. Not listening to your patients, having poor bedside manners or treating them poorly can negatively impact their experience as well as the reputation of your practice. This poor patient care can lead to dissatisfied patients, lost business and damaged reputation. Patients who are dissatisfied with their care are less likely to return to that practice or hospital as well as recommend them to a friend or family member. Those with a negative experience are also more likely to write a negative review.

The impact of excellent patient care

Now that we’ve answered the question, “Why is patient care important?” - we can discuss how great patient care can make a difference. Great patient care has the biggest effect on the patient, which seems pretty obvious. The better the patient is treated, the happier they will be throughout their stay and when they leave. It increases patient engagement, which increases the chance that they will be more involved in their own health outcomes

Beyond an increased experience for the patient, which is most important, improved patient care can also have great benefits for the organization. This includes better ratings and reputation for the organization as well as increased revenue. When patients are happy with their healthcare, they return and refer.

How to improve patient care

We’ve seen how poor patient care can impact multiple elements in the healthcare process, you may be wondering how you can improve your patient care to avoid these negative effects. There are a few things that you can add into your routine to ensure that you’re providing the best for your patients.

A great way to improve patient care is to make sure the patient knows that their time is as valuable as yours. This means working diligently to ensure an accurate and quick diagnosis. The quicker and easier you can make the process for the patient, the happier they will be in the long run. This eliminates unnecessary patient spending from misdiagnosis and prolonged hospital stays.

Another element of great patient care that may seem obvious, but can sometimes be overlooked is communication between patient and provider. Small talk can make a huge difference for the patient in feeling understood, heard and cared for. Asking about small details of their life or feelings can create a great bond with your patient which will  make them feel more comfortable. It is also important to be clear and detailed in your communication about upcoming procedures, diagnosis or care plans. This can also make them feel more in control of their situation, which makes for a more positive experience.

So, why is patient care important? Really incredible patient care can be what makes you stand out amongst healthcare providers and other organizations. It can make your patients feel comfortable, understood and happy long beyond their stay. Working to improve your patient care is beneficial for all of your potential patients, as well as your overall happiness at work.
