Sterile Storage

Sterile Storage

In the healthcare industry, there are medical supplies that are used over and over again. Thinking about it might gross you out a little, but don’t worry because these items are sterile, or at least they should be.

As hospital acquired infections affect more than a million people a year, you might start to rethink if these medical instruments are actually “sterile.” The sterilization process of these instruments are so crucial, and even the slightest mess up could reverse the whole thing completely, making the supplies contaminated with bacteria, fungi, viruses and more!

Having sterile storage to store these supplies is required in hospitals everywhere in the United States.

What is sterile storage

Since a single medical instrument in a hospital setting could be used hundreds of times for different patients and procedures, it is important that these items are sterile and clean for each patient. This is why the sterilization process in healthcare facilities, as well as sterile storage is so important.

The sterilization process kills all forms of bacteria, fungi, viruses, spores, and other harmful organisms which attach themselves to medical items and can cause infection. After that, the items must be stored in a proper sterile storage unit to make sure the items stay clean.

Some of the items that need to be kept sterile when stored include clamps, needle holders, probes, rectal instruments, mouth and throat instruments, and micro-surgical instruments.

Problems that occur

If these instruments are not sterilized or stored properly, there are problems that can arise; the biggest one being hospital acquired infections, or HAIs. These infections are received by a patient during a medical procedure or treatment, and can be life threatening. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates about 1.7 million HAIs a year in America alone, with 99,000 associated deaths.

Catheters are one of the biggest causes for hospital acquired infections, causing urinary tract infections to many. Other HAIs that are common are pneumonia, gastrointestinal illnesses, and primary bloodstream infections.
